Seven decades that carried Kerala's classical art from the laterite soil of Malabar to the academic groves of Santiniketan.
Born on 10 December 1939 in Manjeri. Raised in a household balancing the social reformism of his father, C. Krishnan Nair, with traditional stability. He concluded his formal schooling in 1954 to heed a deeper calling in the classical arts.
Entered Kerala Kalamandalam during its "Golden Era," undergoing rigorous Gurukula training under the legendary maestros of Kathakali and mastering the architectural exactitude of the Kalluvazhi style.
Transitioned to professional performance with the renowned PSV Natyasangham in Kottakkal — working as both performer and early educator, polishing his craft alongside prominent figures of the stage.
Mobilised his art for the nation: a gruelling two-month mission in 1964 performing for army jawans at the high-altitude Himalayan borders, followed by representing Kerala at the Republic Day Parade for three consecutive years.
Relocated to Kolkata, overcoming language barriers to immerse himself in Bengali cultural life. As a freelance artist his reach expanded internationally, including a pivotal three-month performance tour across Japan in 1975.
Invited by the eminent Kanika Bandyopadhyay to formally join Sangit Bhavana. Here he pioneered a syncretic pedagogy, fusing the biomechanics of Kathakali with Tagore's Rabindra Nritya, eventually becoming a Professor under the UGC.
Assumed the highest role as Principal of Sangit Bhavana. His indispensable presence led to a service extension beyond the standard retirement age, before he formally retired in 2004 — leaving a structural stamp on generations.
Post-retirement, he served a four-year term as a Governor Nominee for Rabindra Bharati and was appointed a Board of Study member for Sangit Bhavana in 2022. He remains in Santiniketan, actively guiding the next generation.
